Birding in the Buckeye Area

Picture
I live in the swamp
The Buckeye Trail or -more properly- the Buckeye section of the Crabtree Creek Trail, is part of the City of Raleigh's Greenway system. It has been a location where Audubon bird counts have been held both in December and in May for many years. This site is intended to give information about birding past, present and hopefully future.

The location is distinctly urban. In fact it is situated inside the belt-line. Nevertheless, it provides interesting birding opportunities for those of us that cannot escape the city on a daily basis. Its complete bird list counts well over a hundred species and we hope to give the many people who already enjoy the trail for walks, jogs and bike-rides easier access to its avian treasure. For a birder, the trail or the boardwalk are never the same twice, because there is always something else to be seen.

The site aims at documenting each species both with statistical information and with photographs. All photographs are taken in the Buckeye area, except for the "Other places" entry.

This site was started May 16, 2012 and the last edit was on May 13, 2013.  I added some pictures of both Solitary and Spotted Sandpipers that I got to see on the same day.

The  City of Raleigh is currently working on putting the main sewer through the area. This project will continue for about a year. (See blog)

Unfortunately, the North Carolina legislature has decided in June 2013 to cut funding for greenways in the state
